01 Dec What I Learned After Making the Leap Into Entrepreneurship
When the day came for me to become a full time entrepreneur, I thought I was ready.
I had an amazing resume, great work experience, client success stories and awesome recommendations. People knew me. People knew I worked hard. Potential clients would choose me because I am good at what I do – I thought. I even had a little money put away for hard times. I thought I had this business thing in the bag!
Boy, was I wrong.
I blew through my savings in six months.
The clients I thought would magically appear because I was so awesome did NOT.
The people who knew me weren’t ever going to do business with me, and if they did, they could not afford to pay me at the level that would help sustain my life or my business.
I was in a real pickle.
I found myself in such a predicament because I had been so singularly focused on being good at my service that I had neglected to actually build a business and position it for success. Nearly three years in and I was only a service provider – not an entrepreneur. Not a real business owner.
I had to make the leap.
For me, I had to start practicing what I preached.
I had to refine my service offerings. I had to identify my target customer and make certain they knew about my business and me. I had to demonstrate success. I had to put pen to paper and create a plan to become consistently visible to my ideal clients.
I had to talk the talk and walk the walk.
I’ve had high highs and the lowest lows. I’ve wondered how I would pay rent. I’ve wondered why I was unsuccessful. I’ve felt like I was on top of the world, and I’ve felt like I was losing my mind. I’ve had as many blows as successes. I learned just how resilient I really am.
Over the past 12 months, I have doubled my income. I have been asked to speak at nearly 50 workshops and events that are filled with my ideal clients. Potential clients swarm my inbox, send me messages on Facebook and some even ask to take pictures with me on the street (who knew?!). I have secured some great contracts and I’ve developed meaningful relationships, all while doing what I believe I was created to do.
